Your private guide collects you from your Cape Town accommodation in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, and you set off east out of the city. The drive follows the N2 through rolling farmland and over scenic mountain passes, with the landscape gradually opening up as you leave the Cape Peninsula behind. Your first major stop is Mossel Bay, a relaxed harbour town on the Indian Ocean that marks the start of the Garden Route, where you can stretch your legs and take in the sea air.
From the coast you turn inland toward Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, crossing into the semi-arid Klein Karoo.
