Tour Plan (Itinerary)

Below is a typical itinerary for this private Cape Winelands tour. Your guide may adjust the route based on your wine preferences and pace.

Your private guide collects you from your Cape Town accommodation in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, and you set off east out of the city. The drive follows the N2 through rolling farmland and over scenic mountain passes, with the landscape gradually opening up as you leave the Cape Peninsula behind. Your first major stop is Mossel Bay, a relaxed harbour town on the Indian Ocean that marks the start of the Garden Route, where you can stretch your legs and take in the sea air.

From the coast you turn inland toward Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, crossing into the semi-arid Klein Karoo. Here you visit the spectacular Cango Caves, one of the world’s great cave systems, where guided walkways lead through vast underground chambers filled with dramatic limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites that have built up over hundreds of thousands of years. Deep beneath the surface the caves stay cool all year, a striking contrast to the dry Karoo landscape above.

Next you visit a local ostrich farm, where you learn about these remarkable flightless birds and the farming heritage that made Oudtshoorn famous during the feather boom of the late 1800s. In the late afternoon you arrive at the Chandelier Game Lodge, where an evening game drive offers the chance to see giraffe, ostrich and other wildlife in the soft light of dusk. The day ends with dinner and a comfortable overnight stay at the lodge.

After breakfast at the lodge, you head out on a morning game drive while the air is still cool and the animals are at their most active. This is a relaxed chance to see giraffe, ostrich and the reserve’s other wildlife up close, with your guide sharing insights into the animals and the surrounding Karoo environment, and plenty of time to take photographs.

From Oudtshoorn you begin the journey back toward Cape Town along the famous Route 62, often described as one of the most scenic drives in the world. The road winds through the Klein Karoo between towering mountain ranges, passing farm stalls, vineyards and quiet country towns, so that the changing landscape makes the return an experience in itself rather than simply a drive home.

As you travel, your guide points out the landmarks and shares the stories of the regions you pass through, from their geology to their farming and winemaking traditions. You arrive back in Cape Town later in the day and are dropped at your accommodation, carrying memories of caves, wildlife, coastline and Karoo scenery from a compact but full two-day adventure.
